Why is my picture worse on my new HDTV then my old tube TV?

HDTVs just aren't made to display a SD picture. Even if there were the adapters you mention, it wouldn't help. You would still be feeding the TV a SD signal. A HDMI cable can't upgrade that signal to HD.
