How is this caliber? 7,62 x 54 R?

good caliber, the only thing I'd add to the others, is that it is a little closer to the U.S. 30-06 rather than the .308 winchester. It has been around a long time and is still very much in use today. The druganov sniper rifle is chambered for it, and it saw much use in viet nam as a sniper weapon. As for hunting, not with the military bullet, it doesn't expand properly for game animals. You can find commercial ammo with the proper softpoint for hunging, but it is a little pricey. Surplus ammo for plinking and target is cheap and available.
